S.E. Shires 1YM Large Bore Tenor Bell Section – Pre-Owned, Unlacquered
This is a pre-owned S.E. Shires 1YM large bore tenor bell section, approximately 10 years old. It’s fully compatible with all S.E. Shires Custom Series components as well as Q Series parts using .547 bore valve sections or straight neckpipe conversions.
Do unlacquered brass instruments play better than lacquered ones?
Many players believe they do—and this bell is a great example. The original owner had the lacquer professionally removed to achieve a freer, more resonant orchestral sound. Medium weight and unlacquered, it plays open and vibrant. While unlacquered bells can be polished, they eventually develop a patina like this one. Some players even allow that patina to mature before sealing it under clear lacquer for a vintage, custom aesthetic.
Can a brass bell be “trained” by a great player?
Absolutely. When high-level professionals play with excellent pitch and strong resonance over time, the bell alloy can actually develop a “memory” and become more responsive. This is one of those rare bells—broken in by a seasoned orchestral player and now ready for its next chapter.
There are no dents, dings, or signs of repair. Structurally perfect. Cosmetically, it shows typical unlacquered oxidation but could be polished if desired. A brand-new 1YM bell from the factory sells for over $1,500 (2025 pricing).
