Martin Imperial Trombone Made in the early 1930's, Elkhart, IN. Martin is one of great American instrument makers from the early 1900's. John Henry Martin, the founder of the company was born in 1835 in Germany. He learned instrument making in Germany as an apprentice from one of the great German instrument makers. The original company was founded in Chicago in 1865, the last year of the Civil War. But the factory was destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. Martin lost everything. Eventually, he then went to Elkhart Indiana and worked for Conn. His son also followed in his tradition and also worked for Conn, but later started Martin Band Instruments 1905-1910. The company continued on until eventually being acquired by Leblanc around 1971. There is a lot of history with these instruments. Trumpets, Trombones, Saxophones. Many of the Jazz greats played on Martin- Charlie Parker, Dizzie Gillespie, Miles Davis, plus many more.
