Vintage Archive Trombone – Sold

The King 6B Duo Gravis is a legendary model among vintage bass trombones, and this one is a solid, gig-ready example with all the right features. It has a 9 5/8" gold brass bell and the classic Duo Gravis dependent rotor setup, offering a warm, centered tone with excellent projection. It’s responsive and reliable—perfect for a player stepping into the world of bass trombone or looking for a trusted secondary horn.

What makes the King Duo Gravis a unique bass trombone, and is a dependent rotor setup a drawback?

The King Duo Gravis was one of the first American production bass trombones to feature a dependent double valve system, where the second rotor only engages when the first is already activated. While some modern players prefer independent systems, many bass trombonists still love the simplicity, reduced weight, and free-blowing feel of dependent horns like the 6B. The Duo Gravis design offers a very natural, centered response with excellent warmth, making it a favorite among jazz bass players, doubling professionals, and schools alike.

This particular instrument has had some minor past damage to the bell cross brace and knuckle joint below the valve section, but those areas have been professionally straightened and restored. The horn now plays and looks terrific. The handslide is very good, and there are no mechanical issues that affect playability. Cosmetic lacquer wear is visible on the bell section and end crook of the slide—nothing out of line for a vintage horn of this age.

Whether you’re an advancing student, a school program in need of a budget-friendly bass, or a King small bore player looking for a solid commercial or big band bass, this 6B would be a smart and musical choice. It plays with stability, warmth, and clarity, and has that classic King feel in the low register.
