About Doug Bert, Founder and Owner
Doug Bert has been playing the trombone since the age of ten. His private teachers include renowned musicians Robert Settle, Bernie Schneider, Lewis Van Haney, and David Baker. Doug is an alumni of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra (SLYO) and his music education includes studies at University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) and Indiana University.
Doug’s professional career began with the Al Cobine Orchestra, and he toured for five seasons with the Andy Williams Show in the 1980s. Over the years, Doug has built a reputation not only as a talented trombonist but also as a respected educator and community member in the St. Louis music scene. He is actively involved with the St. Louis Low Brass Collective and is a proud member of Local 2-197, AFM (American Federation of Musicians).
In 2013, Doug released a jazz CD titled Back Home with the Doug Bert Quartet, featuring local St. Louis jazz musicians Tom Byrne on guitar, Patrick Flynn on drums, and Ben Wheeler on bass. The album showcases Doug's passion for jazz and highlights his skills as both a performer and bandleader. Back Home is available on all major streaming services, allowing listeners worldwide to enjoy the music.
In addition to founding and owning The Brass Exchange, Doug teaches private lessons to trombone players of all ages, from students to seniors. He also plays professionally in the St. Louis area, continuing to share his passion for music through both his teaching and performances.
