SHIRES

Shires Bass Trombone Valve Section – Q36 Independent Model, pre-owned and in excellent condition, with very limited prior use. This modular component features all original lacquer and parts, and has never been damaged or repaired. It's a great option for upgrading, replacing, or building out your custom trombone configuration.

Shires Q Series components, especially valve sections, are not typically offered individually by the manufacturer or standard dealers. At The Brass Exchange, we specialize in modular instruments and trade-ins, making unique parts like this available to those in need of a solution that’s otherwise hard to find.  A custom series Independent Shires Valve Section as a separate as of the beginning of 2025 was priced at $3350, and also includes installed thumb rest bar.

This valve section uses traditional rotary valves in an independent configuration, meaning each valve operates on its own and can be used separately or together. This differs from a dependent setup, where the second valve only activates when the first valve is already engaged. Independent systems offer more flexibility, especially for bass trombonists playing in orchestral or commercial settings.

Shires also offers other valve designs in their lineup, including the Axial Flow (formerly Thayer) and the TruBore, each with unique playing characteristics. If you’ve ever wondered: What do I do when my valve section fails or I want to try a different valve system?—this is your opportunity.

Also ideal for repair techs or brass specialists, this valve section can be a lifesaver for custom projects or as a donor part for service horns.
