Understanding S.E. Shires Removable Leadpipes for .547" Large Bore Tenor Trombones

S.E. Shires has long been recognized for offering highly customizable professional trombones, and one of the key features contributing to that flexibility is their removable leadpipe system. For players of .547" large bore tenor trombones, the ability to interchange leadpipes allows for meaningful changes in response, tone, and resistance.

Shires removable leadpipes are typically designated by number—1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3—with each offering a different length and playing characteristic. A leadpipe marked with an "L" at the end (e.g., 2L or 3L) simply denotes a longer version of that specific model. Many professional players carry multiple leadpipes and select based on the musical setting, feel, or tonal preference.

Each leadpipe connects via a threaded collar—a design that is proprietary to S.E. Shires and not universally compatible with other brands. While other makers may use removable systems, the threading and fit are unique to the Shires build, ensuring precise alignment and seal when used with Shires instruments.

When purchasing a new custom trombone directly from the S.E. Shires factory, it typically includes three removable leadpipes, giving players immediate options for dialing in their preferred sound. The removable leadpipes are also mostly compatible with the Shires Q Series, including popular models like the Q30. However, due to slight manufacturing variations, fit with Q Series bells isn't always perfect, and occasional adjustment or re-threading may be needed.
