Olds George Roberts Model P-22 Bass Trombone – Vintage Mint
Vintage Archive Trombone – Sold
This is a truly exceptional example of the Olds George Roberts Model P-22 Bass Trombone, in mint vintage condition. Known as “Mr. Bass Trombone,” George Roberts helped define the sound of modern bass trombone playing, and this model was built specifically for him. It’s not just a namesake—it’s a player’s horn, made for smooth phrasing, lyrical tone, and orchestral-style warmth.
Why did George Roberts play a bass trombone with only one valve?
Back in his era, single-valve bass trombones were the standard, and that’s simply what most players used. When double-valve instruments became more common later on, Roberts was once asked in an interview if he ever considered switching. His response? He said he always seemed to get along just fine with one valve—and never felt the need to change. For him, it was more about how you played the horn than how many valves it had.
This horn features a large 9.5" yellow brass bell and a traditional closed-wrap F-attachment, tuned with a slide on the valve section. The response is broad and warm, with a clear low register and singing overtones up high. It plays incredibly evenly across the entire range and would be a serious performer for any orchestral, studio, or jazz bass trombonist looking for vintage character.
The horn has been fully serviced and is in exceptional mechanical and cosmetic condition—no repairs, no dents, and minimal lacquer wear. The slide is excellent, and there are no issues affecting tone or playability.
Includes a new hard case, ready to protect this classic for years to come.
