Martin Committee Trombone – .500 Bore, Vintage 1938, Very Mint

Vintage Archive Trombone – Sold

This is a rare and special find: a Martin Committee Handcraft Imperial trombone, made in 1938. Exceptionally collectible, yes—but more importantly, this horn plays as good as it looks. It has a .500 bore and a 7.5" gold brass bell, fairly lightweight and quick to respond. The tone is rich, colorful, and full of nuance, and the upper register absolutely sings. If you’re looking for a horn that stands out both visually and musically, this one delivers.

Are Martin Committee trombones as desirable as Martin Committee trumpets?

To some players, yes—but with a caveat. The Martin Committee trumpets tend to fetch much higher prices in the vintage market, largely due to their iconic status among legendary jazz players. Miles Davis famously played a Committee trumpet, and today artists like Chris Botti continue to use them, which keeps the demand strong. While the trombones haven’t achieved quite the same cult status, many experienced players consider them underrated gems, especially in the lead and jazz world. The sound has a magical quality—warm, expressive, and unmistakably Martin.

This particular instrument is in remarkably mint condition for its age. The handslide is flawless—smooth, fast, and clean. The bell and body are original, with the tuning slide having been relacquered. It has clearly been well cared for over the decades, and it shows in both its appearance and playability.

Whether you're a professional lead or jazz player, a collector, or simply someone who wants a rare horn with true musical character, this 1938 Martin Committee is a standout. It comes with a brand new Protec case for protection and portability.

This one has been sold and now resides in our Vintage Archive, but it remains one of the finest Committee trombones we’ve ever had.
