Humes and Berg Pixie Mute with original Red/White finish, Stonelined, Aluminum, Precious Metal and is still made by Humes & Berg in Indiana, near Chicago.   This is the type of mute to use with a plunger when you want to make your trombone talk like the teacher on Charlie Brown.  Is the type that Al Grey of Count Basie Band used.  He wrote a book on plunger technique too!  Depending upon the size trombone bell you play on, it may be necessary to file down the corks to insert far enough into the bell.  Some guys will reposition the corks and re-glue them. Proper Pixie fit depends upon bell throat/opening size.  Larger trombones such as .547 tenor usually do not need cork modifications.  However, the ideal fit is to have the bulb of the mute all the way in so that a plunger will completely cover it, no leak.   Al Grey would also remove the insert from the top opening, with a pair of needle nose plyers.  These two tricks together will improve pitch when using a plunger.  But, it may work fine for you as is, depending upon the bell size opening.  This is a classic trombone mute, never going out of style.  Trad Jazz guys and dixie players delight!
