Holton TR180 Bass Trombone with Split Dependent Valve Section. This is a remarkably clean early 1970s TR180 that has been updated with a modern split rotor configuration. The valve section is smooth and responsive, playing flawlessly across all registers. The handslide is a mint condition TR180 replacement with excellent alignment and outstanding action—among the best we've seen on any Holton bass.

The rose brass bell has never been creased, dented, or damaged and retains a dark, classic tone associated with Holton bass trombones from this era. An optional E tuning slide is included, offering even greater flexibility in low register tuning options. The horn comes with a non-original early Protec case in solid condition, and the original Holton mouthpiece is included.

This TR180 would be an outstanding choice for any bass trombone player—professional, amateur, or advancing student. It plays dark and resonant at soft dynamics, with excellent projection and brilliance when pushed, particularly in the trigger register. Holton’s signature sound profile is warm and full, and this particular horn showcases that beautifully.

A bit of history: The TR180 was a favorite of Professor Lewis Van Haney at Indiana University, who appreciated its smart, intuitive valve layout. The split rotor setup offers dependent tuning in Bb/F/E. The first valve functions as an F trigger, while the second engages only when the first is active, providing a low E (not Eb or D). This setup allows for a true low B in seventh position—matching the position and pitch of B one octave above on a tenor trombone—and a low C played with both valves engaged in an adjusted sixth position. This system makes it especially intuitive for tenor players who double on bass.

Classic Holton build, great player, and an increasingly rare find.
