Overview

The Greenhoe GC2-Y Custom Small Bore Tenor Trombone represents a refined modern interpretation of the classic American small-bore jazz instrument.

Players researching the Greenhoe GC2 or small bore trombones often start with vintage models like the Conn 6H or King 2B. The GC2-Y builds on that tradition with a modern design focused on consistency, precision, and real-world reliability.

This configuration features:

• .500" straight bore
• 8" yellow brass bell (medium-lightweight)
• Nickel silver handslide with yellow brass end crook
• Ribbed ferrules and engraving
• Two interchangeable leadpipes

For this build, we specified a slightly heavier bell-brace configuration. This adds structural mass through the center of the instrument, improving balance and contributing to a more developed tonal core—while preserving the quick response expected from a true small-bore lead instrument.

As an authorized Schilke–Greenhoe Pro Shop, The Brass Exchange works directly with the factory to supply these instruments to serious players.

Note on Bell Construction and Bracing

Early Greenhoe GC2 models were produced with an unsoldered bell rim, similar in concept to vintage Conn 6H instruments. During later production, the factory transitioned to a soldered rim design for consistency.

For our inventory at The Brass Exchange, we specifically request the original unsoldered rim configuration, as it more closely reflects the response and resonance characteristics many players expect from this style of instrument.

In addition, we specify a solid tube bell-brace configuration for our builds. This adds structural mass to the bell section, resulting in a more stable feel and a more developed tonal core—while preserving the quick response expected from a true small-bore lead instrument.

Player Perspective

The first impression is how naturally the horn responds.

Pitch centers sit exactly where you expect them, and articulation feels immediate without becoming brittle. The GC2-Y speaks easily across the full range, and players working in the upper register will notice how stable and accessible the instrument feels above high D.

Compared with many vintage small-bore trombones, the GC2-Y feels more efficient and consistent in the hands. Where older instruments may vary from note to note, this horn maintains a predictable response across the entire range.

The added brace weight gives the instrument enough substance to produce a broader tonal core without sacrificing agility. Slide action is smooth, fast, and balanced—built for real playing situations, not just light use.

This is the kind of instrument players tend to keep in the case and reach for consistently—it simply works.

How Does the GC2-Y Compare to Vintage Small Bore Trombones?

The Greenhoe GC2-Y is frequently compared to classic models such as the Conn 6H and King 2B.

Many players considering the GC2-Y are familiar with instruments like the Conn 6H or King 2B.

The GC2-Y captures the same essential playing characteristics—quick articulation, efficient response, and a focused lead voice—while offering a level of consistency that vintage instruments cannot always provide.

Players typically notice:

• More stable pitch centers across the instrument
• Greater consistency from note to note
• Improved slide tolerances and reliability
• A more predictable response in demanding playing situations

The character is familiar—but the consistency and reliability are on a different level. That’s the difference most players notice immediately.

Who This Instrument Is For

The GC2-Y is a strong fit for players who:

• Appreciate the feel of classic small bore trombones
• Want greater consistency than vintage instruments typically offer
• Play regularly in jazz, commercial, or studio settings
• Need an instrument that performs reliably night after night

For players moving from a Conn 6H or King 2B into a modern setup, the transition feels natural—but more refined.
