Selecting the right trombone depends on various important factors. Without having the basic ideas regarding some key factors you might end up with the wrong one. Following are some important tips for trombone buyers.
Types of Trombone
There are multiple types of specialty trombones available on the market making it quite challenging for first time buyers to decide which one to choose. Three main types of trombones are straight tenor, bass trombones and trigger-type tenor.
The straight tenor does not have tubing unlike the trigger-type tenor. This makes it the easiest for amateurs to handle. The trigger-type tenor comes with extra tubing attached to its main loop. As a result, trigger-type tenors are much longer and the tuning changes from Bb to F. The brass trombones are bigger in size with large bores and double rotors that stretch the horn’s low end further.
Conventionally, tenor trombone is preferred by students at the beginning and then they move on to other types after a year or two. However, many of them continue with straight tenor over a long time.
Student, Intermediate, Professional
These are often found as trombone model names. Student trombone is machine-made and preferred by first time trombonist players. After two to three years most students move on to intermediate level. However, professional trombones are usually reserved for professional trombone players.
Bore size
The bore size is one of the most important determining factors while choosing a trombone. The bore size regulates its playability and the overall tuning along with many other things. Larger the tubing diameter the better the tuning or sound. However, for children it is recommended to use a smaller bore size. It is more manageable by children and also the amount of air required to create quality tone is also much less. Typically, .500” to .525” tubing diameter is ideal for children who are first time players or learners. Gradually after completing their preliminary training they can shift from small bore size trombone to intermediate levels.
Mouthpiece
Mouthpiece is one of the most important components of a trombone musical instrument. There are multiple mouthpieces that are used while playing a trombone as different mouthpieces create different sounds. Broader and deeper mouthpieces create a richer tone. Thus, it is appropriate for an orchestra. Alternatively, if you want to use it for jazz music then a shallower mouthpiece is the one you need. Maintenance and Storage
Trombone is a delicate instrument and requires proper maintenance and storage in order to enhance its longevity. This involves regular slide oiling and lubrication. Without lubrication the slide won’t be able to move smoothly making it difficult to play and can cause damage in the long run. On the other hand, it is extremely important to disassemble the parts of the trombone and store it in a secure place. For regular use, it is safer to use a sturdy case to store the trombone parts.
