Bach 50B Mt. Vernon NY Bass Trombone – “Sleeping Beauty”

This exceptionally rare Bach 50B bass trombone, made at the Mt. Vernon, NY factory in the mid-1950s, is one of the finest examples we've ever encountered. Nicknamed “Sleeping Beauty” here at The Brass Exchange, this horn was so pristine and well-preserved, it felt like it had been pulled from a time capsule—untouched and waiting to be awakened.

Highly sought after by both collectors and professional players, Mt. Vernon-era Bachs—especially those made between 1953 and 1963—are widely regarded as some of the best trombones ever built. When evaluating vintage instruments like this one, understanding the historical value and build quality is key. At The Brass Exchange, we specialize almost exclusively in trombones and understand the features, craftsmanship, and nuances that matter to serious buyers.

Modern trombones have their place, but many players agree: the materials, construction methods, and tonal qualities of Mt. Vernon horns set them apart. The Bach 50B is a prime example of this legacy.

Here’s what we said when it was listed in 2021:

“Bach 50B Mt. Vernon NY Gold Brass, mid-1950s, pristine mint condition. Plays with elegance—rich dark chocolate overtones, excellent slotting, and just the right amount of resistance. Features a 9.5" gold brass bell, standard weight handslide with gold brass outers and yellow brass crook. Sterling silver Harwood leadpipe, no damage or dezincification, and lacquer in outstanding condition. Even the original French-style alligator case was near perfect—odor-free, clean, and structurally sound.”

This instrument has since been sold and now resides in our Archive section as a reference for collectors and players alike. If you happen to own a Mt. Vernon 50B—or are trying to find one—contact us. We may be able to help you locate one, or appraise the instrument you already have.
